What the hell was going on in Melbourne in the 1940's and 50's?

They really did produce some outlandish designs, few more so than the justifiably famous Healing "Moderne" known better today as "The Bathroom Scales".

Trying to capitalise on our desire for all things modern this set was designed to "hang on the wall, out of harm's way" I wonder how many fell to their death.
