Leo, Alec and Rae Weingott founded The Kriesler Radio Company at 43 Alice Street, Newtown, Sydney. Named after Fritz Kreisler the violin virtuoso and composer, they changed the spelling to stop Fritz taking them to the cleaners. They found it difficult competing in a marketplace with 243 registered radio manufacturers and by 1933 the company was facing liquidation. Percy Tuit fresh from the hosiery wholesaling business, snapped up 49% of the business and did a fantastic job promoting it. Kriesler, like other manufacturers made a great contribution to our war effort. At wars-end they started spending their special "put aside" advertising account and Rae Weingott's brilliant catch-cry "Kriesler Triple Throat" catapulted them to 3rd place in Australia's radio hierarchy. Their most famous, and popular, radio is the "Beehive" |
